MIFARE is since quite many years the main standard for all sorts of 13.56 MHz RFID applications. There are some different types, mainly differing on the level of security. For low-cost applications, MIFARE Ultralight is the optimal solution and is widely used in guest cards for events, etc. Mifare Classic is the original product and already on the market ever since 1995. Mifare Plus features a slightly higher security than MIFARE Classic. MIFARE DESFire is the advanced product, providing the highest level of security and flexibility.
NFC (Near-Field-Communication) is widely used in many applications such as ticketing or for example smart phones. NFC tags are very inexpensive and have made a rapid rise on the market. NFC is based on the ISO14443 and ISO18092 standards
